#32 Surprise

#032 01/24/2013
I've been drawing Zentangles for just over a month now, and really enjoying it.   I find myself doing mini ones in my notes at work now.  It is definitely a stress reliever!

I love how a string starts out looking like one thing, and when you fill it in, it is completely different when it's done.   I also really love to watch it go from plain drawing to a 3-D pop once shadowing is added.

I need to start taking some before and after pics.  I'll work on doing that for some future pieces. :)

Patterns Used:   Nipa, Phicops, Punzel, Girdy, Bumps, Knight's Bridge, Fern

"Leaf" No Lines

#031 01/23/2013
I'm trying to adjust my artwork to be more in line with classic Zentangle techniques .. one of the big things for that is to not actually draw over the string lines between each pattern, but instead let them just bump up against each other and hide the pencil lines in the patterns and shading.

I struggle with this a little, and I feel like I am "cheating" a bit by putting the straight edges of some of the patterns right on those string lines ... so while not drawing the lines as strings, I'm still drawing them as patterns.    Baby steps, huh? :)

Patterns Used:  Batllo, Shattuck, Static, Click Clack, Foot Lites, Beadlines, Bitten, Punch, Bunzo

Nature Speaks

#030 01/22/2013
Here's my thirtieth completed ZIA (zentangle inspired art) piece.    I decided to focus on patterns that remind me of natural elements.  When I look at these tangles, I see flowers, spider webs, sticks, pine needles, bubbles, rocks, seashells, sunshine, straw, and more.

What do you see?

Patterns:  Hollibaugh, Crescent Moon, DL Sunray, Girdy, Verdigogh, Tipple, and more of my own style.

Bow on Top

#028 01/20/2013
I decided to stick with the ribbon and bow theme for today since it was so much fun yesterday.   These could definitely be addictive!

Funky Loops

#027 01/19/2013
I saw some twisted ribbon designs while perusing Flickr and was inspired to try some of my own.  Here is my first attempt.  I freehand drew the loops and then filled in each one with a different pattern.

Patterns Used:  Barber Pole, Bilt, Coaster, Copada, Shattuck, Jonqual, Sand Swirl, Echoism, Feathers, Hypnotic

Valentine Postcard

#026 01/18/2013
It might be because Valentine's Day is coming up and all the stores are full of heart-shaped items, but I've been in a heart mood lately.   I made this postcard and crammed it full of lots of patterns.  It was fun to practice so many different patterns in one piece.

Patterns Used: Knight's Bridge, Twisted Rope, Dutch Hourglass, Reticulated, Worms, Zin, Sand Swirl, Fescu, Clothesline, Verve, Queen's Crown, Meer, Tipple, Phicops, Bunzo, Tagh, Batllo

This particular one is already gone, but others are available for purchase in my Etsy shop!

Practical Postcard

#025 01/17/2013
I've decided to try some postcards rather than just greeting cards.  I bought some Bristol smooth surface paper, 100 pound weight, and cut it into 4" x 6" cards.

Here is the first one.  I am using a regular mechanical pencil to add the shading, because I find that it smears less than the other artist pencils I've been using.  I thought the smearing would be an important issue for a postcard since it will be handled so much.

I am sending this postcard myself, but other original artwork is available for purchase in my Etsy shop!

Sankegg Sample

#024 01/16/2013
This greeting card is inspired by Diva's weekly challenge #89.  The focus of this challenge is a tangle pattern called Sankegg, by Maria Vennekens, CZT from the Netherlands.  I struggled a bit with this pattern, and in the end, I added some additional lines to the center of each open part of the pattern.

Simple String

#023 01/15/2013
This piece was inspired by Diva's weekly challenge #90, which was to use TanglePattern's String #001.  Because I was using an Artist's Trading Card (ATC) sized tile, I added a additional rectangular section to either end.

Limit Two Per Tangle

#022 01/14/2013
Today's artwork is inspired by Diva's newest Weekly Challenge #102, which is to create a piece using only the two patterns of Auraknot and Bunzo.

It was fun to limit myself to just two and not get overwhelmed with the many other options.  I really like the way it turned out, too.

Family Time

I haven't been drawing much the last few days because we were out of town visiting family.   We spent lots of time with my two-year-old niece.   I'm determined to make sure she grows up with a love of crafts, so I planned out two projects for us to make.   It was a lot more work than I thought it would be, but we all had a great time and the finished projects turned out great!

We made bird seed hearts to hang on the trees outside using this great tutorial at hellobee.  We used honey instead of corn syrup and larger bird seed full of nuts.  Next time, I would stick to the small bird seed which I think would hold together better.   My niece really enjoyed making them, as well as waiting for the birds to come and eat them.  She kept saying, "Come on birdies, eat your hearts!"

The second project we made was salt dough handprints and footprints.  This tutorial at Imagination Tree was very helpful; the one difference was I rolled the dough between parchment paper instead of onto a bowl.   I was thankful the dough was so forgiving to allow us to start over multiple times.  It was quite the adventure to get her to keep still and not grab at the dough under her little fingers and toes!   After they dried, she painted them with help from a bunch of family members, so it was a nice project and memory for everyone.

I also was able to fit in one new drawing.  My mom really likes hearts, so that was the inspiration for this one.

All Lined Up

01/08/2013 #020
This piece is inspired by Diva's Weekly Challenge #92, which was to start with a string made up of stripes.  This definitely clicks well with my style, and I really like how it turned out!

Patterns used:  Alien Ties, All About 'V', Punch, Archer, Shard, Golven, and Hypnotic, along with some original doodle designs.

Sweetie

This piece features the pattern Socc for Diva's weekly challenge #94.

It morphed itself into a piece of candy, and also features only patterns starting with the letter 'S', so I'm naming it "Sweetie"!

Patterns used:  Socc, Sand Swirl, and St. John's Cross (modified)

Oh, Mickey, You're So Fine

#017 01/05/2013

Friday Fun

#016 01/04/2013
For Friday's tangle I decided to give a funky outer edge to see how it would go.   I tried some simple patterns to show my husband how it works.   I'm hoping he'll start drawing with me sometime!

SomeZing Funky

#015 1/3/2013
This tile was inspired by Diva's weekly challenge #96, which was to utilize the pattern called Zinger.

I think this might break some of the classic Zentangle rules, in that it is mostly one-directional, and also appears a lot like natural elements rather than completely abstract shapes. I do like it, though! My husband was even impressed .. which says something, for sure!

Patterns used: Zinger, Laced, Fern, Fescu, Raindotty, Web, and Birdie Feet

I Got No Strings

#014 1/2/2013
Today's tangle is inspired by Diva's weekly challenge #97: No strings attached.

The challenge was to complete a tile starting with a blank canvas without any strings (i.e. pencil guidelines).   The eyeball looking design wasn't intended, but that is part of the fun of Zentangle, you never know what you'll end up with!

Patterns used:  Arc Flower, Copada, Floatfest, Dutch Hourglass, Msst, Diva Dance, and Fescu.

Itsy Bitsy Hidden Bikini

Today's tangle is inspired by Diva's Weekly Challenge #98 (yes, I'm catching up on those I missed).

This challenge includes using the pattern Keenees by Donna Hornsby, CZT.  It's the pattern in the upper left, made of little circles with triangles in them.  She said the name of the pattern was inspired by the itsy-bitsy teeny-tiny polka-dot bikini.  Cute!

The other patterns used are Florz, Sand Swirl, Feather Fall, Blooming Butter, and Betweed.
